SaskEnergy Vehicle Donation to help Saskatoon Food Bank

December 12, 2006

SaskEnergy Vehicle Donation to help Saskatoon Food Bank

The Saskatoon Food Bank today received a delivery van from SaskEnergy that will be used to support its many food donation programs and services throughout the city.

Employees from SaskEnergy handed over the keys for the delivery van to Bob Pringle, Chief Executive Officer of the Saskatoon Food Bank. The 1995 GMC 3500 Cube Van, with 115,000 kilometres in mileage, had been used for delivering equipment such as natural gas meters, but is no longer required.

"This van is a well-maintained, low-mileage vehicle that will provide the Food Bank with years of reliable service, and is another example of how our Crowns support their community partners "said Andy Iwanchuk, MLA, Saskatoon Fairview, on behalf of Andrew Thomson, Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy. "While SaskEnergy usually auctions off surplus vehicles, in this case they were approached by the Food Bank to see if they could help due to continued maintenance issues with an existing high-mileage delivery vehicle."

"The van will see continual use every day throughout the year picking up food donations from across Saskatoon," said Bob Pringle, Chief Executive Officer, Saskatoon Food Bank. "This donation couldn't have come at a better time and shows the strong support the Saskatoon Food Bank receives from corporate partners like SaskEnergy. The money we'll save on fuel and maintenance costs will be well-used in other program areas."

The Saskatoon Food Bank put this van to use immediately by picking up and delivering over 2,600 lbs of produce for this year's Christmas hampers, donated by Martins Produce of Saskatoon. The van will also help deliver 1,400 Christmas hampers, starting December 16th.
