SaskEnergy provides commodity market update to Rate Review Panel

SaskEnergy announced today it has provided the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel (SRRP) with a market update, which included a revised natural gas commodity rate of $6.57/Gigajoule (GJ). The SRRP requested a market update as it considers SaskEnergy’s application for a new November 1, 2007 commodity rate.

On August 30, 2007, SaskEnergy announced it had applied for a commodity rate of $6.93/GJ, reflective of lower natural gas costs in advance of the winter heating season. Continued downward pressure on winter gas prices has resulted in this revised commodity rate being included with the market update to the Panel.

“The Canadian Gas Association has indicated that many Canadian natural gas utilities would either be filing for lower winter commodity rates or providing revised rates to regulators, because of favourable market conditions for the upcoming winter heating season,” said Pat Atkinson, Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy. “While our government awaits the Rate Review Panel’s recommendations later this month, we are pleased to see SaskEnergy working to provide Saskatchewan consumers with the lowest possible natural gas rates this winter.

“The new rate represents a decrease of 5.7% from the current rate of $7.17/GJ or savings of approximately $66 in annual gas costs for the average residential consumer,” Atkinson added.

SaskEnergy does not mark-up the price of gas, as natural gas is sold to Saskatchewan customers at cost.
