New Natural Gas Line Installation in Downtown Regina

If you live or work near downtown Regina, you may have noticed SaskEnergy crews working near 13th Avenue and Broad Street this summer.
Coordinating with City of Regina work to minimize disruptions, SaskEnergy’s Construction team has been installing a new natural gas main along 13th Avenue, from Hamilton Street to St. John Street, replacing one that runs under the back alley south of Victoria Avenue.
“This work is part of our planned system integrity work,” explains Jason Stoudt, Construction Manager. “Projects such as this are critical to help maintain safe and reliable service for our customers and are an important part of our ongoing maintenance and upgrade programs.”
The project, which is expected to wrap up by the end of September, has required careful planning to manage the tight confines, unique work site, and additional considerations such as other utility infrastructure along the route. Busy pedestrian and road traffic in the area resulted in the need for some road closures, temporary fencing and additional monitoring to ensure the work site is safe for the public both during and after business hours.
“There are a lot of moving parts on sites such as this one, and it requires extensive pre-planning and ongoing collaboration across SaskEnergy, as well as with the City of Regina and other utility providers,” Jason says. “Thanks to these efforts, the project is going very well, but it is definitely more challenging installing gas lines in an area like this compared to working in a field or easement.”
Once the new gas line is in service, the old one will be safely retired and disconnected from the rest of the natural gas system.
