On June 6, residents, volunteers and community partners came together in Regina’s North Central neighbourhood to create a cleaner, safer place to call home.

The annual North Central Community Cleanup, organized by the North Central Community Association (NCCA), helps remove waste and debris from neighbourhood alleys and properties. The goal is to make the area safer and more welcoming — especially for families and children heading into the summer months.

“This event is something I never hesitate to be a part of because I truly believe everyone deserves to live in a safe and clean environment — especially so the neighbourhood children are able to play safely and without worry,” says SaskEnergy volunteer Misty-Lee Bird.

Throughout the day, volunteers, including 11 SaskEnergy employees, worked in teams to collect litter and remove larger items such as furniture, appliances and yard waste. These are materials that can be difficult for some residents to dispose of on their own. By working together, volunteers help reduce hazards, improve the look of the neighbourhood and support overall community well-being.

For many residents, the cleanup is a sign that people care.

“While we are removing the garbage from the alleys some of the residents will come out and thank us and some will even help us load it up and you can see how grateful they are we are able to provide this service for them,” says Misty-Lee.

In just a few hours, volunteers filled five large dumpster bins with collected waste and debris, showing how much can be accomplished when people come together with a shared purpose.

SaskEnergy has supported the NCCA’s cleanup efforts for the past six years, with employees working alongside community volunteers throughout the day.

In addition to volunteer support, SaskEnergy supplied trucks and trailers to help transport waste to the landfill — making it easier to remove heavy, bulky materials quickly and efficiently.

Experiences like this leave a lasting impression on those involved.

“After the cleanup event, I often find myself reflecting more, appreciating what I have, and recognizing that there is always room to help others and show empathy,” Misty-Lee says.

By working together with organizations like the NCCA, SaskEnergy is helping support stronger, healthier communities across Saskatchewan — one neighbourhood at a time.
