SaskEnergy is investing approximately $60 million to modernize its Unity Compressor Station — an essential hub in Saskatchewan’s natural gas system.

The renewal project will replace aging infrastructure by installing four new, high efficiency compressor units, upgraded monitoring and safety systems, and an expanded footprint to enhance reliability and meet the province’s growing energy needs.

“As Saskatchewan grows and the demand for energy increases, this project is about more than infrastructure. It’s about strengthening local communities and fueling long-term economic development,” Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Jeremy Harrison said. “What people may not know is that this station has been a cornerstone of SaskEnergy’s natural gas system for 65 years. This renewal will ensure it will continue to serve the Unity area for many more decades to come.”

The Unity Compressor Station keeps natural gas moving safely and efficiently through SaskEnergy’s pipeline network. As natural gas travels long distances, it loses pressure. Natural gas compressor stations, like that at Unity, are critical to restore that pressure at key points, so natural gas continues to flow to Saskatchewan homes, businesses and industries.

The Unity Compressor Station can move up to 230 terajoules (TJ) of natural gas per day, which is roughly the same amount Regina and Saskatoon use together on a minus 20-degree day. It compresses natural gas coming from Alberta at the Unity interconnect and moves gas from the Unity Storage Field, both of which play key roles in ensuring system reliability especially during periods of peak demand.  

“This station is vital to our system, and this is a strategic investment in the long-term sustainability of Saskatchewan’s natural gas network,” said Mark Guillet, SaskEnergy’s President and CEO. “Modern infrastructure means we can continue delivering safe, dependable natural gas to homes and businesses without interruption, maintaining our 99.99 per cent system reliability.”

Planning for the project began in 2023 and site preparation began in the summer of 2025. Installation of the new compressor units will start in early 2026 and is scheduled for completion by November with no impact on natural gas service to Unity and area residents during the process.
