Blanket exercises build understanding of shared history
A recent blanket exercise at our Regina Service Centre hit close to home for SaskEnergy Operations employee Todd Sanderson. Todd spent eight years in the residential school system and knows firsthand the experiences discussed during the exercise. “The path we had to walk as a people helps explain where we are now,” Todd says. “Our history should be shared to close a gap between cultures that never should have been separated in the first place.” A number of SaskEnergy employees have taken part in blanket exercises as part of our company’s commitment to Truth and Reconciliation. A blanket...
'Starting in a good way': A pipe ceremony’s important role for a project
On a sunny day in June, a team of SaskEnergy employees met with an Indigenous Elder, consultants, and the Mayor of St. Louis, Saskatchewan. They wanted to begin a pipeline replacement project, occurring within village limits, with care and respect. Elder Calvin and his team from Fox Valley Counselling led a pipe ceremony for the group alongside the South Saskatchewan River — an important area to Indigenous and Métis communities. The ceremony took place near the buffalo monument in St. Louis, which holds deep cultural meaning. “We’re learning to recognize the importance of the land through...

A beautiful late summer day in the Qu’Appelle Valley set the stage for a powerful and heartwarming experience as 25 SaskEnergy employees, families and friends attended the Treaty Four Powwow in Fort Qu-Appelle on Saturday, September 20. For many, it was their first time attending a powwow and what they found was a space filled with warmth, pride, and community. “What stood out the most to me was how open and welcoming the space felt, not just in a physical sense, but emotionally and spiritually,” says Bonnie Favreau, one of the employees that attended. “Being there helped me realize that it...

Building relationships and natural gas lines with the Peter Chapman Band
In many Indigenous cultures a pipe ceremony symbolizes unity, peace and a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Since early 2022, these ceremonies have become commonplace during SaskEnergy gas line construction projects. “A pipe ceremony is really about connection and prayer. For example, at SaskEnergy when we have these ceremonies as part of our construction projects, we’re asking for the safety of our personnel, we’re asking for a successful project and we’re also asking for forgiveness for disturbing the land, for disturbing Mother Earth,” explains Joseph Daniels, Director...
