Our system is 99.99 reliable — here’s how

When you turn up your thermostat or fire up your gas stove to cook supper, you might wonder about the energy source behind these simple tasks. SaskEnergy’s natural gas system spans across Saskatchewan. We serve about 411,000 customers through more than 72,000 kilometres of distribution gas lines. We work hard to maintain a system that’s more than 99.99 per cent reliable. That means you can count on us year-round, whether for heating your home during the coldest of winter days or heating your pool during those beautiful summer nights! At SaskEnergy, we invest about $100 million per year on...

Expanding our system to support a growing Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan’s continued growth is creating new demand for reliable energy — and we are expanding our system to keep pace! In 2025, we broke ground on a series of complex system expansion projects east of Saskatoon. This included two new high-pressure gas lines and an expanded facility at our Prud’homme compressor station. The first phase — a 40-kilometre gas line from Patience Lake to Prud'homme — was completed last fall, and work on the second phase is now underway. As part of phase two, SaskEnergy will install a new meter station and an 80-kilometre gas line to support customer growth in...

Solar power is lightening our emissions from operations

After a full year of generating power, the large-scale solar installation at SaskEnergy’s Town Border Station (TBS) 1 in south Regina has proven to be a shining success! SaskEnergy’s first renewable electricity system began generating power in April 2023. In its first full year of operation, the TBS 1 solar panels performed even better than expected! “The system was sized according to that site’s annual power consumption, so we expected that the station’s net electrical usage would balance to zero,” says Trevor Ficor, an Engineer-in-Training with our Emissions Management team. But in our 2023...

Using storage caverns to serve our customers

As the weather turns cold, our customers rely on natural gas to heat their homes and businesses. SaskEnergy plans year-round to provide Saskatchewan residents with the energy they need. One of the ways we meet the demand for energy is with storage caverns. Storage caverns are large underground cavities where we can safely store natural gas. A storage cavern has an average size of about 40 to 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools and are about one kilometre below the ground. “A storage cavern is the greatest thing for the storage of energy,” says Derek Leach, Director of SaskEnergy’s System Control...

The role of Gas Control in providing reliable energy for customers

SaskEnergy maintains nearly 90,000 kilometres of gas lines, including our transmission lines that connect to Alberta, Manitoba and the United States. This is how we import gas and transport it across the province to our customers. With a system that is more than 99.99 per cent reliable, our customers can count on us to provide the energy they need to heat their homes and run their businesses. Having the right amount of gas in place where and when customers need it is part of this reliability. Our Emissions Management team's loss is everyone’s gain

As SaskEnergy works toward the goal of reducing emissions by 35 per cent by 2030, our Emissions Management team is leading the charge. A small but mighty team of four employees, all of their work hinges on SaskEnergy’s environmental regulatory compliance requirements and voluntary commitments related to emissions reduction. This team is also responsible for capital projects connected to SaskEnergy’s Roadmap to 35 per cent by 2030, and provides project support for emissions requirements at new or upgraded facilities. In this capacity, they work with teams across the company — from engineers to...
