Federal Carbon Tax to Appear on Upcoming SaskPower and SaskEnergy Bills

Starting April 1, the Federal Carbon Tax will be applied to all bills received by SaskPower and SaskEnergy customers. This will result in a monthly increase for the average residential customer of about $2 for power and $9 for natural gas for the rest of 2019. “In Prairie Resilience, our government has a Saskatchewan-based solution to lower greenhouse gas emissions without a tax,” Minister Responsible for SaskPower Dustin Duncan said. “SaskPower worked hard to ensure there would be no rate increase this year. The federal government is imposing a carbon tax that will take more than $52 million...

SaskEnergy “going solar” to cut emissions at Town Border Stations

SaskEnergy has converted its Town Border Station in southwest Regina to generate solar power as part of its commitment to cut emissions. The Regina station is the first of several such facilities across Saskatchewan that will be converted to generate solar power over the next seven years. The increased use of renewable electricity is one of the pillars of SaskEnergy’s emissions-reduction roadmap. “This project is a major step in SaskEnergy’s goal to achieve a 35 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030,” said Don Morgan, Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy. “SaskEnergy is also focused on...

For several years running, SaskEnergy employees have volunteered their time to support annual community cleanups in Regina and Yorkton. In Regina on May 11, SaskEnergy pitched in at the North Central Community Association (NCCA)’s annual community cleanup to help make the central Regina neighbourhood a bit cleaner and safer. More than 20 employees and their family members assisted in filling nine oversized garbage bins with difficult-to-dispose items. These included tires, scrap metal, mattresses, furniture, appliances and yard debris. Meanwhile, the NCCA enlisted a group of young people to...

Tipi-raising competition delivers lessons about work and life

Raising a tipi is about more than building a shelter. This was one of many lessons learned by teams in the Glen Anaquod Tipi Raising Competition. Four teams from SaskEnergy joined others from the community at the University of Regina in late September to take part in the annual event. The event was started in 2008 by Glen Anaquod, an Elder from Muscowpetung First Nation, to bring cultures together and share teachings in a kind and loving way. “It is a competition. But the day is about participating in Indigenous culture, team building and most important, having fun,” says Sharla Sparvier...

SaskEnergy applies for first commodity rate increase in seven years; remains second lowest in Canada

SaskEnergy has applied to the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel to increase its commodity rate, which would continue to be the lowest in Western Canada and the second lowest in the country. The proposed commodity rate of $3.15/gigajoule (GJ), up from $2.58/GJ, would increase the average residential customer’s bill by $5.65 per month. SaskEnergy’s commodity rate is a pass-through of market costs, with no profit or loss earned. “Natural gas prices in the open market have essentially doubled since SaskEnergy decreased the commodity rate in 2019. Increased natural gas demand for power generation...
