'Starting in a good way': A pipe ceremony’s important role for a project

On a sunny day in June, a team of SaskEnergy employees met with an Indigenous Elder, consultants, and the Mayor of St. Louis, Saskatchewan. They wanted to begin a pipeline replacement project, occurring within village limits, with care and respect. Elder Calvin and his team from Fox Valley Counselling led a pipe ceremony for the group alongside the South Saskatchewan River — an important area to Indigenous and Métis communities. The ceremony took place near the buffalo monument in St. Louis, which holds deep cultural meaning. “We’re learning to recognize the importance of the land through...

SaskEnergy supports community safety through cleanup events

For several years running, SaskEnergy employees have volunteered their time to support annual community cleanups in Regina and Yorkton. In Regina on May 11, SaskEnergy pitched in at the North Central Community Association (NCCA)’s annual community cleanup to help make the central Regina neighbourhood a bit cleaner and safer. More than 20 employees and their family members assisted in filling nine oversized garbage bins with difficult-to-dispose items. These included tires, scrap metal, mattresses, furniture, appliances and yard debris. Meanwhile, the NCCA enlisted a group of young people to...

Using storage caverns to serve our customers

As the weather turns cold, our customers rely on natural gas to heat their homes and businesses. SaskEnergy plans year-round to provide Saskatchewan residents with the energy they need. One of the ways we meet the demand for energy is with storage caverns. Storage caverns are large underground cavities where we can safely store natural gas. A storage cavern has an average size of about 40 to 50 Olympic-sized swimming pools and are about one kilometre below the ground. “A storage cavern is the greatest thing for the storage of energy,” says Derek Leach, Director of SaskEnergy’s System Control...

In 2019-20, demand from SaskEnergy’s industrial transmission customers increased for the fifth straight year and contributed to the Corporation’s highest-ever level of transportation and storage revenue. In addition, the record for customers’ daily natural gas consumption in the province was broken on three consecutive days, with a peak of 1.55 Petajoules on January 15, 2020. Core operations remained a focus, as SaskEnergy invested $330 million to expand natural gas storage and delivery capacity for customers throughout Saskatchewan.
