SaskEnergy is advising customers – both residential and business – that the unseasonably warm weather, following right after intense cold across the province, may create conditions that can lead to an underground natural gas leak. +

While SaskEnergy’s pipeline system is designed to withstand Saskatchewan’s weather conditions, underground leaks can occur, typically in the spring, as frost leaves the ground. This year, due to the intense cold and the depth of the frost layer, followed by sudden warming, SaskEnergy is alerting customers that conditions are favourable for a leak to occur.

If you detect a natural gas odour near your home or business, please contact SaskEnergy immediately, 24-hours a day at 1-888-700-0427.

A SaskEnergy technician will be dispatched to the area to determine if a leak has occurred. If an underground leak is confirmed, SaskEnergy will make the area safe and a SaskEnergy construction crew will be sent to make repairs, which typically take a couple of hours, during which time gas will be shut off for that customer. A SaskEnergy technician will ensure all natural gas appliances are relit and working safely once service is restored.

The most common way to detect a natural gas leak is using your sense of smell. The use of a natural gas (methane) detector is an additional safety measure for detecting a natural gas leak. SaskEnergy offers a $25 rebate on the purchase of a natural gas detector. More details on detecting a leak and the rebate are available on the SaskEnergy website.
