Gas Retailers

Buying from a third-party supplier Gas Retailers are independent suppliers and are not affiliated with/or endorsed by SaskEnergy. In Saskatchewan, you have the option to buy natural gas from an authorized Gas Retailer if your annual consumption is less than 660,000 m 3. Similar to any purchase decision, it’s important to educate yourself on whether you are dealing with a reputable company and to understand the contract you are signing. SaskEnergy can’t provide advice, recommendations, or guarantees related to a supply contract, credit worthiness, or business practices of a Gas Retailer...

Natural Gas Service to be Discontinued at Nine Properties Due to Safety Concerns

Ground shifting impacts SaskEnergy’s ability to provide safe, long-term service in two areas After extensive monitoring, engineering and geotechnical analysis, SaskEnergy has determined it can no longer safely serve a small number of residential properties within two southern Saskatchewan resort communities due to ongoing ground movement. Slope movement in the community of South Lake, located on Buffalo Pound Lake, is impacting SaskEnergy’s natural gas pipelines, requiring service be discontinued to seven properties. SaskEnergy will be able to reroute a gas pipeline away from a slope movement...

Reliable natural gas service a year-round effort at SaskEnergy

Brrrrr it’s cold in here! Luckily, there’s a quick fix! With the simple press of a button on your thermostat you’ll soon be nice and toasty. That was the case for many of SaskEnergy’s customers in February, as they used 36 per cent more gas than they did for the same month in 2024. While we didn’t set a new “peak day” record this winter, February’s daily average for natural gas delivered in the province was the second highest on record. While turning up your thermostat might feel like hitting the easy button, it takes year-round planning and maintenance from teams across SaskEnergy to make...

Natural gas usage in Saskatchewan continues to break records

The return of extreme cold weather across Saskatchewan this week has again helped break the record for natural gas consumption in the province. Natural gas usage of an estimated 1.66 petajoules (PJ) on January 6, 2022 surpassed the previous daily record set on December 29, 2021. This marks the fifth time in the past two weeks that daily natural gas consumption in Saskatchewan has approached or exceeded 1.6 PJ. Prior to this winter, the previous daily usage record was 1.57 PJ, set in February 2021. SaskEnergy measures daily natural gas consumption for the 24-hour period from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 a...

Freeze/thaw cycle creates conditions for possible underground natural gas leaks

SaskEnergy is advising customers – both residential and business – that the unseasonably warm weather, following right after intense cold across the province, may create conditions that can lead to an underground natural gas leak. + While SaskEnergy’s pipeline system is designed to withstand Saskatchewan’s weather conditions, underground leaks can occur, typically in the spring, as frost leaves the ground. This year, due to the intense cold and the depth of the frost layer, followed by sudden warming, SaskEnergy is alerting customers that conditions are favourable for a leak to occur. If you...

Building relationships and natural gas lines with the Peter Chapman Band

In many Indigenous cultures a pipe ceremony symbolizes unity, peace and a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Since early 2022, these ceremonies have become commonplace during SaskEnergy gas line construction projects. “A pipe ceremony is really about connection and prayer. For example, at SaskEnergy when we have these ceremonies as part of our construction projects, we’re asking for the safety of our personnel, we’re asking for a successful project and we’re also asking for forgiveness for disturbing the land, for disturbing Mother Earth,” explains Joseph Daniels, Director...

Natural gas system outage in Melfort area

Early morning on Wednesday, January 10 th, 2018, SaskEnergy identified a significant pressure drop in its natural gas system near Melfort. As a result, approximately 4,500 customers in Melfort, St. Brieux, Kinistino and surrounding rural areas lost natural gas service to their homes and businesses. SaskEnergy technicians and operators immediately began working to address the issue as quickly as possible. By mid-morning, the source of the pressure drop was identified as a pipeline rupture of a high pressure transmission line between Weldon and Birch Hills. A SaskEnergy construction crew was...
