Every day, the Regina Food Bank helps about 500 families — and that number keeps growing. During the holiday season, the need is even greater, making extra help from volunteers essential. Recently, two groups of SaskEnergy employees spent time at the Food Bank, sorting and organizing food donations. A quarter century ago, our construction crews were a main attraction for children spending their summers at Kenosee Provincial Park. SaskEnergy employees worked for several summers to extend gas service to cabins in the area in the late 1990s. “Some kids, you couldn’t get rid of them. Four new benches now offer visitors a place to sit and reflect at the Regina Indian Industrial School (RIIS) cemetery in west Regina. Approximately 38 children are buried in this cemetery, in unmarked graves. Today, the site serves as a place of remembrance. Families, survivors and community members visit and honour the children who never returned home. The RIIS Commemorative Association works to preserve the site’s history. For several years running, SaskEnergy employees have volunteered their time to support annual community cleanups in Regina and Yorkton. In Regina on May 11, SaskEnergy pitched in at the North Central Community Association (NCCA)’s annual community cleanup to help make the central Regina neighbourhood a bit cleaner and safer. More than 20 employees and their family members assisted in filling nine oversized garbage bins with difficult-to-dispose items. Every year, the North Central Community Association organizes a clean-up to help get rid of garbage and large items in the inner-city neighbourhood before winter arrives.
