Encroachments

Be aware of what's below ground when working above

Any temporary or permanent structures that extend onto a SaskEnergy Right of Way hinders our ability to gain access in response to an emergency. These situations can cause long-term outages, damage to facilities and pose a risk to public safety.

What is an encroachment?

An encroachment happens when any item or structure, whether temporarily or permanently,  extends over the Right of Way. This includes structures alongside, overtop or underneath our infrastructure or facilities.

What is considered SaskEnergy infrastructure or facilities?

  • Regulators
  • Shut-off valves
  • Meters
  • Gas lines, service lines and main lines

What type of structures qualify as an encroachment?

Any item or structure, whether temporary or permanent that extends over our infrastructure or facilities qualifies as an encroachment, including, but not limited to:

  • Cement pads
  • Garages, sheds, quonsets
  • Hot tubs, pools (underground or above)
  • Fences, retaining walls
  • Trees, flower beds, ponds

Safety Hazards

The following encroachments are examples of safety hazards that pose an additional risk. If a safety hazard exists, it will need to be corrected as soon as possible.

  • Detached garages
  • Enclosed sunrooms
  • Gazebos
  • Electrified sheds
  • Shed greater than 10 square metres
  • Anything restricting access to the gas meter

Plan ahead

The first step when digging or planning work projects above ground is to identify any buried utilities in the vicinity of your project.

Do you have an encroachment?

If you think you may be encroaching on our infrastructure or facilities, you will need to complete an encroachment check application to determine if action is required.

Removing the encroachment

We need to be able to access our infrastructure and facilities at any time. If an evaluation determines an encroachment that qualifies as a safety hazard, you will need to remove the hazard or we will need to install a new natural gas line - at your cost.
