Wildfire
Any type of fire has the potential to spread. Weather conditions like temperature, humidity and wind all contribute to how quickly and widely a fire can spread, causing outages to essential services. While natural gas itself is a combustible fuel, it can be used safely to run backup generators and to provide power during emergencies if handled properly.
Preparing for a Wildfire
If you suspect your property will be impacted by a wildfire, consider the following:
- Cover exterior vents with a metal mesh screen to prevent embers from travelling into the home.
- Clear a defensible space around your home by removing vegetation. If you're excavating or using heavy equipment, ensure you request an underground line locate first. Emergency line locate services are available in impacted areas by calling Sask 1st Call at 1-866-828-4888.
During a Wildfire
- If an evacuation is required, follow the evacuation order.
- SaskEnergy field technicians or Emergency First Responders will make the determination if natural gas service must be shut off.
- Do not attempt to turn off natural gas service at the meter yourself. You could cause injury or damage to the meter.
- If your natural gas service is shut off, you will be notified about the service disruption.
Caution
Never use appliances that are not certified for indoor use as a temporary source of heating such as a barbecue, gas range or a portable generator. They increase the risk of carbon monoxide buildup.
After a Wildfire
- Once officials confirm it is safe to return to the area, our technicians can begin assessing the natural gas infrastructure.
- Do not use any gas appliances that have been damaged until they have been thoroughly inspected by a licensed gas contractor. The contractor will check, repair and pressure test all gas lines that may have been affected by the fire.
- If natural gas service was turned off as a safety precaution but you didn't experience any fire damage, contact us to restore service.
- If you smell a natural gas leak at any time during the restoration, report it by calling 1-888-7000-0427.

Restoring natural gas service after a fire requires professional expertise to ensure safety and to prevent further hazards. Never attempt to put natural gas appliances back into service yourself. If appliances need service or replacing, a permit is required, and the work must be done by a qualified heating contractor.
