Building relationships and natural gas lines with the Peter Chapman Band

In many Indigenous cultures a pipe ceremony symbolizes unity, peace and a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Since early 2022, these ceremonies have become commonplace during SaskEnergy gas line construction projects. “A pipe ceremony is really about connection and prayer. For example, at SaskEnergy when we have these ceremonies as part of our construction projects, we’re asking for the safety of our personnel, we’re asking for a successful project and we’re also asking for forgiveness for disturbing the land, for disturbing Mother Earth,” explains Joseph Daniels, Director...

Building relationships with Indigenous communities through feasts

When Joseph Daniels, SaskEnergy’s Director of Indigenous Engagement, drove home after recently helping co-host two feasts and pipe ceremonies on back-to-back days, he was “smiling ear to ear!” “It was one of those weeks that I’ll never forget,” says Joseph. “Getting a chance to be out there fostering our relationships with the people of these communities, that’s the stuff that I really get a charge out of.” The first feast was held on September 28 and was co-hosted by the James Smith Cree Nation. This feast celebrated the completion of the Melfort East Expansion Project, which enhances...

Building relationships with the people we serve

Ever wonder how new homes, cabins or businesses get connected to our natural gas system? SaskEnergy’s Customer Connect Technicians (CCTs) are instrumental to this process. Adam Colvine works as a CCT in Saskatoon and the surrounding rural area. He personally sees customers’ connection process through from start to finish, to make it as easy as possible to get service. “A highlight of the job is getting to know people, and hearing their stories of how and why they’re building their dream home or cabin. I like being a part of figuring out the best solutions that will help them realize their...

Buyer beware of door-to-door heating and cooling equipment sales

Saskatchewan plumbing and heating specialists are encouraging homeowners to do their homework and take steps to protect themselves before investing in new heating and cooling equipment. In light of recent complaints, the Mechanical Contractors Association of Saskatchewan (MCAS), Natural Gas Appliance and Equipment Association (NGAEDA), and SaskEnergy Network Members are reminding Saskatchewan residents to properly research door-to-door salespeople and out-of-province companies offering equipment sales. Several local businesses and organizations have received reports of high-pressure sales...

Cabinet Approves SaskEnergy Rate Changes for November 1; Second Bill Decrease for Natural Gas Customers in 2016

The Government of Saskatchewan today approved SaskEnergy's adjustments to both its Commodity and Delivery Service rates, as recommended by the Saskatchewan Rate Review Panel. Starting November 1 st, 2016, residential customers will see an overall decrease of nearly two per cent per month or $15 annually to their heating bills. This follows a decrease of $53 annually, which came into effect January 1 st, 2016. “When you add the savings from earlier this year to this latest decrease, residential customers will see their natural gas bill shrink by $68 annually,” Minister Responsible for...

Carbon Monoxide

What you need to know Carbon monoxide (CO) is an odourless, colourless, tasteless and invisible gas that occurs through combustion, or the process of burning. Excessive amounts of CO will form when there isn’t proper ventilation or an adequate air supply. Most often, exposure to carbon monoxide occurs indoors. Any appliance that burns fuel can cause CO build-up, including fireplaces, gas stoves, water heaters, furnaces, grills, generators or car engines. CO poisoning can happen to anyone but some people are more susceptible than others. Elderly, infants and those with heart or respiratory...

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week to Help Residents Stay Safe

The Government of Saskatchewan is recognizing November 1-7 as Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week to highlight the importance of CO safety and educate residents about prevention measures, something that is top of mind for Garth Kalin of Prince Albert. It was early in the morning on a cold winter’s day that Kalin woke up to the loud sounds of his carbon monoxide alarms. Little did he know, he and his family were at risk of succumbing to severe CO poisoning in as little as one hour had the alarms not alerted him to the danger. The cause was CO buildup in his furnace room. “Carbon monoxide alarms...

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week Declared November 6 to 10

Invisible, tasteless, odourless, and poisonous. Carbon Monoxide (CO) has earned its reputation as the silent killer. To help raise awareness about CO safety, the Government of Saskatchewan has recognized November 6-10 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week. “This week is dedicated to ensuring the people of our province know how to protect themselves and their loved ones from the dangers of carbon monoxide,” Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Dustin Duncan said. “A working CO detector can alert you to danger before physical symptoms appear, which is why our government made CO alarms mandatory in...

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week: Beware of the Silent Killer

Halloween may be over, but something frightening could still lurk in your home. Invisible, odourless, and poisonous, carbon monoxide (CO) is known as the silent killer. “To save lives and prevent life-threatening emergencies, it’s important that we continue to educate people about the dangers of carbon monoxide and ways to avoid the buildup of this potentially deadly gas,” Minister Responsible for SaskEnergy Don Morgan said. “That’s why our government has proclaimed November 1-5 as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week in Saskatchewan.” Earlier this year, the perils of carbon monoxide were driven...

Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week Proclaimed November 4 to 8

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed the first week of November as Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week. Throughout the week SaskEnergy, along with the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) and Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan (TSASK), is reminding the public of the importance of carbon monoxide (CO) safety and the critical need for carbon monoxide alarms in homes. “CO awareness and safety is essential year-round, but especially during the winter months when heating equipment is running more frequently,” said Mark Guillet, President and CEO of SaskEnergy. “Every year...

Caring for land and people through our reclamation program

At SaskEnergy, we want to be good stewards of the environment. We also want to maintain positive relationships with our stakeholders. Our reclamation inspection program allows us to do both! After we complete any largescale infrastructure project, we aim to return the land to its original — or to a better — state. “Our infrastructure is often located on private property. We want to make sure every landowner is happy with SaskEnergy’s service and performance,” says Ashley Syrgiannis of SaskEnergy’s Environment & Sustainability team. Reclamation means carefully replacing the soil and...

Catching more (Ar)rays with additional solar power installations

In early 2023, SaskEnergy’s first net-metering solar installation at Town Border Station (TBS) 1 in southwest Regina began generating electricity from the 176 solar panels installed on site. Fast forward to today, and we now have eight sites with large-scale solar arrays capable of generating power! These installations are a vital part of our Roadmap to 35 Per Cent by 2030, which includes integrating more renewable energy into our operations. “As part of our Roadmap we're focused on reducing both our direct emissions from our operations and our indirect emissions related to electricity...

Ceremony honours memory of children, provides positive start to project

SaskEnergy is honoured to join in ceremony with Indigenous partners as we work on major gas line projects like our Regina City West Elevated Pressure Expansion. Our most recent pipe ceremony, which took place in June, was especially important. It honoured the memory of 35 First Nations and Métis children who died while attending the Regina Indian Industrial School (RIIS). The RIIS cemetery is located near the project’s construction path. “Bringing people together over ceremony is a benefit to the project but also a benefit to the people attending,” says Joseph Daniels, SaskEnergy’s Director of...
