Inspiring the next generation of Indigenous students through STEM

What started as a simple idea has quickly grown into a program making a real difference for students across Saskatchewan. After its first year, SaskEnergy’s STEM Lunch and Learn program has reached hundreds of Indigenous students, built strong relationships with communities and planted the seeds about future careers in science, technology, engineering and math. “We didn’t know exactly how it would be received when we started,” says Dana Kostyk, one of the employees who helped create the program. “But seeing how engaged the students were made it clear this program filled a real need.” The STEM...

Building relationships and natural gas lines with the Peter Chapman Band

In many Indigenous cultures a pipe ceremony symbolizes unity, peace and a connection between the physical and spiritual worlds. Since early 2022, these ceremonies have become commonplace during SaskEnergy gas line construction projects. “A pipe ceremony is really about connection and prayer. For example, at SaskEnergy when we have these ceremonies as part of our construction projects, we’re asking for the safety of our personnel, we’re asking for a successful project and we’re also asking for forgiveness for disturbing the land, for disturbing Mother Earth,” explains Joseph Daniels, Director...

'Starting in a good way': A pipe ceremony’s important role for a project

On a sunny day in June, a team of SaskEnergy employees met with an Indigenous Elder, consultants, and the Mayor of St. Louis, Saskatchewan. They wanted to begin a pipeline replacement project, occurring within village limits, with care and respect. Elder Calvin and his team from Fox Valley Counselling led a pipe ceremony for the group alongside the South Saskatchewan River — an important area to Indigenous and Métis communities. The ceremony took place near the buffalo monument in St. Louis, which holds deep cultural meaning. “We’re learning to recognize the importance of the land through...

Top three winter safety tips from SaskEnergy

Winter has been packing a punch this year, leaving many of us with snow on the roof while we listen to the rumble of our furnaces. In keeping with the season, here are three of SaskEnergy’s top natural gas safety tips to help keep you and your family safe this winter. 1. Keep your exterior appliance vents free of frost, ice and snow. If snow or ice blocks your home’s exterior appliance vents, it can cause equipment to malfunction. Worse, it can cause a dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide—an odourless, colourless, tasteless, invisible gas that occurs through the incomplete combustion of fuels...

Highlighting Saskatchewan community organizations through Share the Warmth Days

There is a lot of good that sharing a little warmth can do. In honour of the 30th anniversary of SaskEnergy’s Share the Warmth program, we launched Share the Warmth Days. The initiative — which ran until February 13 — featured a series of events across the province aimed at highlighting community-based organizations who bring warmth, including shelter, food, clothing and mental health services, to those who need it most. For Share the Warmth Days event, SaskEnergy volunteers partnered with a local organization that was one of this year’s Share the Warmth grant recipients to hand out bags of...

SaskEnergy PDRs are up for a challenge

SaskEnergy Planning and Dispatch Representatives (PDRs) help coordinate daily activities and support emergency response for our Operations teams across the province. No two days are the same, which is why they all have one thing in common — they work well under pressure! “A good PDR is adaptable, communicates well, and has the ability to stay calm when things shift quickly,” says Planning & Dispatch Representative Breanna Cattell who works at SaskEnergy’s Regina Service Centre. “You have to be able to reprioritize in real time without losing your footing.” “Within the PDR roles there are a...

SaskEnergy supports community safety through cleanup events

For several years running, SaskEnergy employees have volunteered their time to support annual community cleanups in Regina and Yorkton. In Regina on May 11, SaskEnergy pitched in at the North Central Community Association (NCCA)’s annual community cleanup to help make the central Regina neighbourhood a bit cleaner and safer. More than 20 employees and their family members assisted in filling nine oversized garbage bins with difficult-to-dispose items. These included tires, scrap metal, mattresses, furniture, appliances and yard debris. Meanwhile, the NCCA enlisted a group of young people to...
